In a large pan, brown 1 lb of ground beef over medium-high heat, breaking it apart with a spoon until fully cooked and no pink remains. Drain any excess fat.
Add 28 oz of crushed tomatoes, 4 fresh basil leaves, and 1 lemon peel strip to the browned ground beef. Stir to combine and bring the sauce to a simmer. Let it simmer gently while you cook the pasta.
In a large pot, bring 8 cups of water to a rolling boil. Add 1/2 teaspoon of salt to the boiling water. Carefully add 12 oz of pappardelle pasta to the boiling water and cook according to package directions until al dente.
Once the pasta is cooked, use a pasta fork or tongs to transfer the cooked pappardelle directly into the pan with the simmering meat sauce. Add 1/2 teaspoon of salt to the sauce, or to taste.
Stir the pasta into the sauce until well coated. Remove the basil leaves and lemon peel strip before serving. Serve hot.
